SeniorNet of Wethersfield is developing a website to keep our members informed with wonderful support from Mrs. Wizard.
The SeniorNet Learning Center in Wethersfield has formed an administrative alliance with the SeniorNet Learning Centers in Plainville, Southington, West Hartford, and Windsor Locks to form the Central Connecticut SeniorNet Learning Center. This alliance, which will have minimal effect on how our Wethersfield center operates, is necessary to facilitate the requirements of SeniorNet headquarters. How will these changes affect our students and volunteers?
SeniorNet is the nation's leading and most respected provider of access to and education on computer technologies and Internet for adults age 50+. Since 1986, SeniorNet has opened up new worlds of information to more than a million people through Learning Centers and a robust online community. Older adults across the country and around the world have learned how computers and the Internet can enhance their lives and enable them to share their knowledge and wisdom with the world.
SeniorNet of Wethersfield Computer Learning Center was officially opened during October 2002 ceremonies. The Center joined the ranks of more than 200 SeniorNet learning centers in cities and towns across the United States. SeniorNet is a unique San Francisco non-profit organization which focuses on computer education and access for seniors, mitigating the social, political, and economic isolation often experienced by senior citizens.
Preparation for instituting the Wethersfield Computer Learning Center began in March 2002 when a group of senior volunteers met for a 2 ½ day briefing by a SeniorNet regional consultant. Topics included computer lab setup, recruiting volunteers, instructor training, administration, public relations, and financial planning. The Computer Learning Center was sponsored by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, SBC/SNET, and the Town of Wethersfield.
Administrative, education, finance and lab committees were formed. During the months that followed the volunteers involved themselves with instructor preparation, preparing training manuals, setting up seven computer class work stations, acquiring office supplies and software, developing class schedules as well as class and registration forms.
Initially two courses were planned—Introduction to Computers and Introduction to Software Applications. Gradually as more volunteers joined and new equipment and software were acquired, more courses were added to the curriculum. Currently, the Learning Center offers 18 different courses and workshops. 690 students have completed 115 courses since October 2002.
